UN International Day of Peace Celebration (“the Celebration”) was successfully held in Sai Kung District of Hong Kong on 21 September 2019. The Celebration was organized by Hong Kong Institute of Education for Sustainable Development, sponsored by Utahloy charitable foundation, and supported by Sai Kung District Rural Committee, Sai Kung District Community Centre, Sai Kung Sung Tsun Catholic School, Utahloy International Schools, St. Bonaventure Catholic Primary School and Little Ark Education Company. More than 100 guests and 100 students attended the Celebration. Prof. Tao Xiping, Honorary President of World Federation of UNESCO Clubs, Centres and Association expressed his congratulatory message to the Celebration. Prof. Tao indicated that Peace is the everlasting expectation of all people. Peace is like air and the sun. People enjoy the benefits without knowing. But we cannot survive if we lose it. Without peace, there will be no development.
Prof. Karen Zhang, Director of Hong Kong Institute of Education for Sustainable Development, Vice President and Secretary General of UNESCO Hong Kong Association, gave a welcome speech at the ceremony. Prof. Zhang introduced the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the importance of Peace, indicated “Climate action for Peace” as the theme of 2019 International Day of Peace. Prof. Zhang also emphasized the threats to living environment from climate change and conflicts caused by resource reduction and climate change. Prof. Zhang appealed to work together for Peace and Sustainable Development and move towards a cleaner, safer and greener future.
Ms. Tracey Cheung of Utahloy Charitable Foundation indicated that Peace is belong to you and me, something you can share to others. “Peace Seed” can grow in year, decade and century at her speech.
Guests raised up their hands with Peace Gesture to response and support Peace together.
The ceremony kicked off by Qilin Dance, dance of Chinese Unicorn. Hang Hau Hakka unicorn dance was inscribed onto the Chinese national list of intangible Cultural Heritage.
Sai Kung Sung Tsun Catholic School presented Beyond’s song “AMANI”. AMANI delivers a message about the love of the children who suffered in the war and promoted the information of the anti-war. Hope that through the song, people will understand the value of peace.
Little Ark brought in “An Enlightenment to the Sounds and Rhythms in Chinese Poetry” and “A Recital on Tang Poetry”. “An Enlightenment to the Sounds and Rhythms in Chinese Poetry” addresses the principles of “Sounds formulating Order” and “Rhythms regulating Literature”. This is the realization of the beauties of Chinese Civilization. Tang poems such as “Contemplations on a Quiet Night” and “A Dawning Morning in Spring” are the introduction for children’s appreciation of China’s classical poetry. The serene scenes and the yearning of missing one’s home town are all delicately revealed in just a few terse and melodious stanzas.
St. Bonaventure Catholic Primary School Choir presented two songs with their angel voice: "Who am I meant to be" mashup dance & singing and When I was small x Canticle of Creatures.The songs encourage people to learn how to lift themselves during difficult times to become the lights of the world and shine bright Through wisdom and humility.
Prof. Karen Zhang presented certificates to the schools and students.
Besides, the Celebration invited Rope Skipping Sport Academy to perform rope skipping, Sai Kung District Community Centre to perform lion dance, and Magic Art Centre to perform clown show and magic show. All the performances made the guests and students very happy. Let’s celebrate the 9.21 International Day of Peace!
